CELEBRATING THE HORTICULTURE OF WINDSOR GREAT PARK
In 2023 I was invited by The Crown Estate to collaborate on a range of bespoke designs for Windsor Great Park. ‘The Great & The Glorious’ collection, draws inspiration from the ancient oaks of The Windsor Estate and the botanicals of The Savill Garden.
The ‘Great’ ancient oaks of Windsor Great Park are a valuable part of our cultural heritage. The sheer scale of tree coverage across the Estate, provides a wealth of biodiversity and is a verdant backdrop to The Savill Garden.
I was lucky enough to spend a day immersing myself in the beautiful woodland garden, meeting one of gardeners who shared their passion and knowledge. Keen to learn about the strong heritage and symbolic Royal connection to this natural landscape, I collated notes and plenty of photos! My challenge was to build a visual story about this ‘garden for all seasons’ and a design that celebrates the seasonal changes of the Windsor Estate through its ‘Glorious’ botanicals.
AND SO THE STORY GROWS
The ‘Glorious’ print embraces all four seasons with a single variety of bloom or foliage:
- Spring: The Eric Savill Magnolia, commissioned by George V and designed by Eric Savill, this springtime flower symbolises the very creation of the Savill Garden itself.
- Summer: Floribunda Rosa ‘Princess of Wales’ found within the sweeping curves of the contemporary Rose Garden, this charming flower has a beautiful Royal connection.
- Autumn: Maple leaves with their stunning transformation that turns the garden into a glowing, golden spectacle.
- Winter: Helleborus ‘Ice Breaker’ brings joy to The Savill Garden in the winter months. Hellebores are a personal favourite of mine and feature in my own collection of fabric designs.
All of the illustrations are originally created with watercolours and inks ready for transforming into repeatable patterns. Sharing The Crown Estate’s ethos for sustainable practices, these designs are printed onto unbleached, natural woven fabrics which are certified organic, without the use of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. Each piece is made by hand creating a one-of-a-kind item that celebrates the connection between Maker and product.
DISCOVER THE COLLECTION
Items in the collection include cushions which are available in large square and smaller rectangular form, lampshades in various sizes, tote bags, zipped pouches in two sizes and keyrings which are made from the offcuts of the larger pieces. All items can be bought in the three bespoke designs.
The Great & the Glorious collection of homeware and accessories are exclusively sold through The Savill Garden Visitor centre which you can visit all year round.
